‘Star Citizen’ has been a game that is growing, thanks to money raised at an incredible rate. The developers have now made almost $150m and have almost 1.8m backers. They originally announced in the end of 2012 what they planned on doing, and wowed us all with their Kickstarter campaign that raised almost $6m.
Now some people have doubts if the game will be even close to what studio head Chris Roberts has as dreams for the game. Some have even said that this will be the next ‘No Man’s Sky’. I am torn on how this game will end up. There is a side of me that understands that they trying to push the space genre of games to a limit that has never been seen before.
Star Citizen: Hype Or A Major Letdown?
However, when you hype a game as much as they are doing with this one, ‘Star Citizen’ has every opportunity to be what they say. However, if their goals are not reached, people will be quick to skewer this game as they have other games in the past.
Chris Roberts has started an AAA game studio from scratch and it is taking time, but think of how long it took for the other AAA studios to reach their stride. Originally I was a little harsh about the way that I spoke of Roberts Space Industries, but it had to do with all the money that they had originally raised and how they weren’t making any of their goals. Also, they weren’t exactly upfront with updating any of the goals after they were missed.
As they started to be a little more open with their development plan, I saw that they were starting to be a lot more realistic with their stretch goals. Instead of giving false hopes, they started to say what they planned on finishing and how it would take time. This left the end goal open as it would probably play in a very different time frame than their original hopes.
The openness of this development process is winning me over slowly with ‘Star Citizen’ and ‘Squadron 42’. By adding ‘Squadron 42’ to their plans, it will continue to bring in even more money for the ‘Star Citizen’ dev process. We will have to see how both of these games continue to develop. ‘Squadron 42’ is planned to release in three chapters starting at either the end of 2017 to mid 2018. As for ‘Star Citizen’, we are unsure of any actual release date, but we know that once it does release, many people will jump up and down for the launch.
As more news comes in regarding ‘Star Citizen’, we will try to keep you filled in on all that we hear, and hope that you have fun playing other space games in the meantime!
